Kindergarten isn't just worksheets! We have been creating and building too! Here are some of our creations!
Fall is here and we have been very busy in Kindergarten for the past month. Below are some pictures of what we have been doing since the last time I blogged. We are back and ready to learn! We began each day by singing our Good Morning Song. Each student is welcomed as the class sings to them. We also have a new student in our class. We worked really hard to remember our sight words we learned before track out. They are I, see, like, a and the. We spelled them silly ways; holding our nose, with a mouse voice and like a cheerleader. Our new sight word this week is the word "can". We also read the poem "I Like School". It has a lot of our sight words in it. We also drew our favorite thing about school. In Letterland, we met Mr. A- the vowel man. He looks just like Annie Apple when he is not in Letterland but he makes a different sound (He says his name). We also learned more about Dippy Duck- Her sound, song, handwriting song, and capital letter trick. We worked on her Letterland workbook page. We continued to work during Daily 5 on our different tasks. Next week, we will put them all together and work on the tasks in small groups. We are really becoming independent! In Reader's Workshop, we read the story The Recess Queen by Alexis O'neill. We made predictions, retold the story and talked about Characters. We talked about the character of Mean Jean how she changed in the story when Katie Sue asked her to play jump rope. We also inferred after reading the story. We even practiced passing the pen to spell words. In Math, we worked on learning the words more, less and equal. We used manipulatives to show groups that are more, less and equal. We continued to counting the days of school. We have been in school 33 days! In writing, we are practicing drawing a detailed picture and telling a story about it. We are also using our knowledge of letter sounds to label parts of our picture. We use our writing folders to help us. On the back of our folders, there are ideas to help us decide what we want to write about. Inside, we decide if the writing is finished or not. It is OK not to be finished. Everyone works at their own pace. Friday, we went to the computer lab and learned about the website reading eggs. We took a test and that told the computer where we should start our reading program. A letter will be in our folders on Monday about Reading Eggs. It will tell you what it is and how to access it at home. Next week will be all about the 5 Senses! We will read the book Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse. In Letterland we will learn more about Harry Hat Man and Munching Mike.
During the Daily 5, we continued to practice reading silently to ourselves. When we finished, we graphed our progress. We are able to read 11 minutes independently. During Work on Writing time, we worked on letter formation. Mrs. Anderson also introduced the third Daily 5 task, Work with the Teacher. We practiced this task as a whole group but when we return from track out, we will be working in small groups. We worked on pointing to each word in a sentence as we read it. We learned our first sight word-see. It was added to our word wall. Throughout the week, we read different books and pointed to the words as we read. These books went home in our book baggies. Book baggies are sent home everyday to practice reading skills. Please make sure that you are reading nightly for at least 20 minutes with your child. In Reader's Workshop, we read the book Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon. Molly Lou was the smallest girl in the first grade. She didn't let that stop her from doing anything! While reading the story of Molly Lou, we visualized (made pictures in our brains) while reading. We also inferred (used clues in the book) to answer the question "Do you think Molly and Ronald are friends at the end of the story?". We also made connections to the story and retold the story as a class. In Math, we have been working on counting to 20, writing numbers to 10 and counting sets of objects. Mrs. Anderson introduced a new game and we practiced playing with our partners. We also learned about 5 frames. These help us subitize numbers (recognize numbers without counting) We also made it to 21 days of school! Now we can count by tens to 20. Next week Is early release and track out!
This week was all about colors! Our poem was called "Rainbow Hair". It was a funny poem that we used to work on our print concepts. We worked on following the words with the pointer, finding letters that we know and reading the color words. We drew a picture to match the words as well. At the end of the week, we sorted words and letters from the poem. During reader's workshop, we read the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. While we were reading the story, we worked on making predictions, retelling the events and making connections to the text. The letters fell from the coconut tree and we drew in our notebook about a time we got hurt. During Daily 5, we continued to practice reading to self. We can read independently for 9 whole minutes! We started our second daily 5 task, Working on Writing. We began by going over the rules to follow and modeling the correct way and the incorrect way to work on writing. Afterwards we practiced by writing letters. In Math, we are continuing to count and work on writing numbers. Friday, we finished our week with a trip to the computer lab. We met Mrs. Chambliss and learned how to use the computer and mouse. We got to play on the website www.starfall.com.
Next week, we will be learning about how our families are alike and different. Two more weeks until Track Out! Last week was all about learning our friend's names and writing our own names! We learned a new song called the Good Morning song. Each morning starts by singing to every student in the class! Our poem for the week was called "Name Chant". The students had to pick out the letter their name starts with along with environmental print that they can read! We worked on pointing to each word as Mrs. Anderson reads the poem. We met several new letterlanders this week! We watched them talk to us on the computer! Some of us even got to pretend to be one of the letterlanders! The students wore these fun hats! We also read a book called Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. We made predictions, retold the story and used clues to understand the book. We used our reading notebook to help us. Friday, we made a special flower with our name on the pedals. There were a lot of fine motor skills involved with this project like cutting, gluing and writing. Ask your student to tell you about the story of Chrysanthemum! Daily 5 has started! We worked all week to build our stamina as readers. Read to Self is the first Daily 5 skill we worked on. We have been reading 3 different ways; reading the pictures, reading the words and retelling a story. When reading, there are a few rules to remember. They are :
We were able to read independently for 5 whole minutes! In math, it's all about numbers! We counted EVERY THING! We counted sea animals, counting chips and even the days in school! This week is all about colors!
We completed our first whole week of Kindergarten! It was full of routines, procedures, rules and fun! We learned to walk in the hall, eat in the cafeteria and sit on the carpet. In reading, we read lots of books and learned some of our print concepts. Together, we read a poem called "Time for School". While reading "Time for School", we looked for our letterlanders and talked about the difference between words and letters. In math, we read a book called Anno's Counting Book and worked on writing numbers. We also sang a song to help us remember how to form them. We practiced counting to ten and even counted our friends every time we left the classroom. Our class has 19 friends in it! Together, we made a graph to show how many boys and girls are in our class. Our class has more girls than boys. Here are the objectives we are working on this week.
Open house was tonight at 5:15. A lot of important information was shared. If you missed Open House, I will be sending home all the information in your child's OWL folder on Friday
